Chicago-based artist Richard Rezac gave a lecture entitled “On Sculpture: Influence, Context, Process,” a brief overview of his sculptural work since 1985. The artist shared his methodology that leads to completing works, including images of preparatory drawings and source materials. Building on the traditions of Minimalism and Post-Minimalism, Rezac’s balanced and elegant object-sculptures are brought to life through various materials like painted and unpainted wood, cast iron, bronze, aluminum, and silk. Working both intuitively and through predetermined mathematically based propositions, his works are often initiated by geometric drawings. Articulating a formal vocabulary filled with personal nuances and cultural allusions, Rezac’s work breathes vitality into abstraction by layering multiple meanings and references within finite forms.
